University of Leicester archaeologists announced today (Sept. 7) that they have found paving stones that may belong to the garden of Robert Herrick, a mayor of Leicester who built a mansion and garden over the church where Richard III was buried. But he had to grow up faster than most children. By eight he’d been in hiding, held prisoner and forced to flee the country. Shortly after, his brother Edward took Henry VI's crown, and Richard became Duke of Gloucester. By the age of 19, he was a knight and Lord of Middleham and beyond. Allegedly, the two tried to escape in 1499. Captured once again, on 23 November 1499, Warbeck was drawn on a hurdle from the Tower to Tyburn, London, where he read out a confession and was hanged. Huntly Castle, Scotland was originally named Strathbogie. The castle was granted to Sir Adam Gordon of Huntly in the 14th century. In 1496, the pretender to the English throne Perkin Warbeck was married to Lady Catherine Gordon the daughter of George Gordon, 2nd Earl of Huntly, witnessed by King James IV of Scotland at Edinburgh. James IV came to Huntly in October 1501 and gave gifts of money to the stonemasons working on the castle. In 1503, James IV came again to play in a shooting contest.
