There is a text I used as a texture on the shoulder of the foreground figure, its a full description, in Latin, of the burning of the bishop of Gloucester in 1555, these little additional touches amused me greatly and were an important way of keeping a personal involvement with each project, I did this a lot over the years and was my way of ‘signing’ paintings instead of writing my name on it somewhere.
The figures face is based on Christopher Lee, and the spire in the background from Mont san Michel in Brittany where I visited the year before painting this.

When I started this I hadn't planned it as a reimagining of a previous cover image, it was only when choosing the colour scheme before painting that some similarities became evident and it was then the drawing was consciously adapted to make this a more deliberate decision. Each of the three top figures were initially trials as a central character before I decided to use all three together.
What was a very conscious thing in my mind at the time was to very deliberately make every figure different from each other. At the time these characters had become very uniform with little variation and were almost bland compared to the potential described in the background, this image started to change that. David Gallagher on Instagram: "Monster A simple figure vignette showing a fast moving alien killer, I wanted a simple image that didn’t need a background and the pose provides a visual indication of the characteristics of the creature. It was for general use and not done for any specific purpose, I generated a whole lot of these trying to cover every type of character type with the intention of building an image library covering most subjects , this wasn’t an official idea but all of these images proved to be useful in various locations. I wanted to include some medieval touches to a napoleonic inspired image such as the votive lettering on the coat, this was occasionally used on late medieval heraldry and added an extra interesting texture . As with most of these single figure vignettes; pose adds more than any detail to the overall impact they have.

David Gallagher on Instagram: "Kill Machine A simple character sketch, a dramatic figure I would have liked to have as large as possible on the page, the tall narrow format was to enable this in layout, I think it was confined to a quarter page box though. A few years back I stopped using black ink except only occasionally, as my alternative I used a base mix of sepia and indigo, I found this gave me the wide range of tones that worked if reproduced in b&w but was much more pleasing to look at if printed in colour. It then only needs an odd colour detail to realise it as a full colour pic with a more subtle colour range.
