Operation Anthropoid 1942

Operation Anthropoid was the code name for the plan to assassinate Nazi Obergruppenfuhrer Reinhard Heydrich in 1942.Many called Heydrich The Hangman of Prague. Heydrich had been installed as Acting Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia. Two soldiers from the Czechoslovak Army based in Britain were assigned to Operation Anthropoid. Josef Gabcik from what is now Slovakia, and Jan Kubis from what is now the Czech Republic, were Warrant Officers as well as being great friends.

On 2 July 1942, most of the children of Lidice, a small village in what was then Czechoslovakia, were handed over to the Łódź Gestapo office. Those 82 children were then transported to the extermination camp at Chełmno 70 kilometers away. There they were gassed to death. This remarkable sculpture by by Marie Uchytilová commemorates them. Yet what had they (and their families) done to warrant such an end?

Karel Curda, the member of the team who betrayed Kubis and Gabcik and Operation Anthropoid. He did it for a million marks, married a German woman, spent the war working as a Gestapo spy. After the war, he was hunted down, tried, and executed. He believed anyone would've done as he did, for a million marks. No honor whatsoever.
