Why not a labyrinth in the backyard?

Fresh Ideas for Outdoor Rooms

Fence Facelift Stock fencing goes quickly from "who cares" to "who knew" when you add inexpensive concrete finials from your local garden center. Foolproof Plants Rather than fill a difficult-to-reach planter with water-thirsty plants, go with low-maintenance succulents. Porch Flooring Mahogany is an unexpected rich-looking, easy-maintenance, and surprisingly affordable covered porch flooring option. Easy Update Interior designers know that a bit of black completes any room. Seems to work…

Garden Labyrinth: an ancient walking prayer. Walking toward the center, let go of concerns, stresses, distractions. Stay a bit in the center, open to clarity and insight. Walking back out, find renewal and refreshment.

Hands On Bible Teacher

This past Sunday we learned about the story of the conquering of Jericho. We made the "Rams" horns as our "Take Home" Activity. The horns were made before class (see previous post). During class the children added the chenille stick around the mouth piece and were allowed to color and decorate their horn any way they wanted. We also used these horns during the review game...but, more on that later. The kids LOVED these horns. They were soooo excited about getting to show their parents their…

"Labyrinths provide a powerful means of introducing restful movement into children’s playspaces/playgrounds. They have one path which leads to the centre and back out again and have been used for centuries as a form of meditation. Walking a labyrinth is a right brain activity requiring a passive and relaxing mindset. This one has a Tristaniopsis 'Luscious' at the centre that will grow and eventually provide shade to the whole pathway."

2017 Many thanks to the staff at Billy Kids - Lilyfield for allowing me a quick look around their newly completed playspaces. It's so gratifying to be able to design a playspaces and work with someone who allows it to be built as per my original vision. And it look like things really work out when they do. Another perfect job by Jamie Miller who built just about everything in the 3 separate playspaces you can see. 2015 The Green Elephant Early Learning Centre, Rosebery, Sydney New South…

Garden labyrinths have long history, find new popularity in Buffalo area - Buffalo-NiagaraGardening.com

Labyrinths date back thousands of years and have been used in many cultures. During Medieval times, many Christian churches incorporated labyrinths into floor designs. Today garden labyrinths are getting new attention at places of worship, medical centers, conference centers, parks, colleges and even backyards. World Labyrinth Day is Saturday, May 5, so this seems a good time to introduce you to some local labyrinths: one at Unity Church in Buffalo, one at the Chautauqua Institution and one…

This would be a wonderful calming activity for kids (and adults!) of all ages. Could be especially useful for future adopted or foster kids with certain special needs.

Walking the labyrinth

I've had enormous success with this labyrinth in the outdoor environment. Not only does it provide the challenge to balance and movement that young children desire, it is a wonderfully quiet and meditative activity. In this photo, you can see one of the four year-old girls winding her way out of the stone pathway. I've found it to be suitable work for all but the very, very young. It can even have a calming affect on the most excitable children of the group. Living in rural Mexico, finding…

A stone and sand labyrinth by Backyard Labyrinths. Very simple but the plain wood border gives this a real "zen" feeling dont you think?

Lectio Divina with Stones

I really couldn’t think of a snappier title than this, but it is a fun thing to make and a great Bible study resource too. I’ve made two versions, both pictured in this post. One is muc…
