The Maori Wars end with British supremacy – Historical articles and illustrations

Disputes over ownership followed involving a series of violent conflicts during the 19th century. These became known as the New Zealand Land Wars. Both sides suffered losses, with the Brittish Crown the eventual victor. Land confiscation and questionable land sales carried on through to the 20th century, until the vast majority of land in New Zealand was owned by settlers and the Crown.

Taken over 140 years ago by Scottish photographer John Thomson, This beautifully composed photograph shows British army recruiting sergeants outside a public house at Westminster. The soldiers are standing on the corner of King Street junction with Great George street outside The Mitre and Dove Public House, I suspect waiting for opening time. This is my colourised version of the sepia toned print from 1877
