Eugène Rousseau (French, 1827-1891) (Artist)     Appert Frères (French, active ca. 19th century) 1878-84  During the Edo period in Japan (1615-1868), the shell-matching game ("kai awase") was popular among women. It involved matching shells that had been painted with scenes from the 9th-century classical novel "The Tale of Genji." This vase has been decorated with such shells.

Carp Vase designed by Eugène Rousseau and made by Appert Frères, 1878–84... Among the most innovative designers to adopt "Japonisme," as the phenomenon became known, was Eugène Rousseau. Initially, he specialized in ceramics, but in the late 1870s and early 1880s, Rousseau produced designs for glass manufactured by Appert Frères in Clichy....the image of the carp in the swirling waters was taken from an "ukiyo-e" print in Hokusai's "Manga,"...
