December 5, 1791: Death of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Contrary to popular belief, Mozart was not buried in a pauper's grave. According to contemporary reports, he was buried in a "common grave" -- that is, as a commoner, not as a member of the aristocracy. The chief difference between the two types of burial was that common graves could be dug up after 10 years; the graves of aristocrats were left undisturbed. We don't know what illness killed him -- at least 118 diseases have been suggested.
