It looks like the burnt German soldiers were mounted infantry on the tank which looks to be a Panzer V “Panther” according to the inclined walls of the turret. Mounted infantry because the body in the foreground has an MG42 between his legs which was a too bulky weapon for tank crews. I read the photo was taken in the Falaise-Pocket/Normandy in August 1944.
