"The famous Weerdinge men after their discovery in 1904: In a time long before modern forensic science, the local constabulary decided to transfer the soggy cadavers to the nearest morgue in a very peculiar fashion. They rolled up the bodies of the two men like human scrolls, wrung them out, and stuffed them into a box."

The Face of Genocide In April 1945, Canadians accompanying British forces in Germany entered the Nazi concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen. Sickened and horrified by the atrocities they witnessed, these Canadians made a visual record on film and on paper of the war's tragic victims. Note the writing on the back of this photo, which reads: "May we never forget and never let it happen again".

Faith Bacon, 1931 A popular burlesque dancer whose star faded. In 1956, she was walking calmly down the 4th story stairs of her hotel when she suddenly opened a window. A friend grabbed at her skirt, but she tore away and jumped. Her body landed on the roof of a one-story saloon next door. She was 46 years old. Her friend told reporters that Bacon wanted the spotlight again. She would have taken any kind of work in show business.

Mass grave at the Wounded Knee massacre. On 15 December 1890 Sitting Bull was shot dead. On December 28, 1890, units of the U.S. Seventh Cavalry captured a group of Minneconjou Sioux Indians at Wounded Knee Creek in southwestern South Dakota. The next day, as the Indians surrendered their weapons, a shot rang out, and then all the cavalry opened fire. At least 153 of the Sioux were killed (some estimate 300, out of about 350) -- most of them women, children, and unarmed men.
