Afghan Girl - Taken by Steve McCurry in June of 1984, appeared on the cover of National Geographic June 1985. The girl's name is Sharbat Gula, she was orphaned during the Soviet Union's bombing of Afghanistan and sent to a refugee camp in Pakistan. Nat Geo found her again 2002. This photo has been named the most recognized photograph in history. It's what made me want to be a journalist.

McCurry took what is inarguably the most famous Nat Geo image ever — the 1985 cover photograph of Sharbat Gula, a. “the Afghan Girl,” a shawl draped over her head, green eyes blazing, in a refugee camp in Pakistan.
