So, I think I've mentioned that I've been in one school district, one school, for the past fifteen years. For the fifteen years I have been there, we have used an anthology (ahhh, can you say basal?) reading program. I never liked it. In fact, I've always hated it. It never seemed rigorous enough. Luckily, I had a great principal that allowed me to toss the anthology and teach with novels. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Insert Snoopy Happy Dance Here!!!!!! Well, in the past couple of years I've…

On the 3rd Day of School...

Wow is all I can say about the kiddos I have this year... they are quite different from the group we had last year and I am thankful! The first two days were crazy with all of the meetings and going over the campus rules, but finally we got down to the nitty gritty today. I teach both Reading and English to 3 period of kiddos and wanted to share what we did today. It was cram packed, but we got everything done and with a smile on our faces. :) During reading we started our reading spirals…

schema anchor chart - I have a poster that I made VERY similar to this one! Great lesson to teach kids how to know what is schema, what we use our schema for, and how to get more schema! Schema Anchor Chart, Ela Anchor Charts, Reading Anchor Charts, Metacognition Anchor Charts, Reading Lessons, Reading Skills, Teaching Reading, Guided Reading, Close Reading

We did our lesson on schema today. It always amazes me how my friends take to this lesson. When I talk about opening that mental file cabinet and pulling out the file labeled . . . , they get it. I love that today one of my friends looked at me and exclaimed, "Wow! Our brain is really amazing!" It sure is! Some familiar topics were discussed where I asked them to tap into their schema, and we discussed how it helps us to better understand and make meaning of our reading. I then had them…

Anchor Chart: What does independent reading look like? Reading Lessons, Reading Resources, Reading Strategies, Reading Skills, Teaching Reading, Reading Comprehension, Teaching Ideas, Guided Reading, Reading Logs

Teaching My Friends!

I post this anchor chart not because it is a fine example of an anchor chart. It's okay. It's kind of sloppy. I'm sure you could think of many ways to make it better. It's not even new. It's from earlier in the school year. I post this anchor chart because of the conversation that came with it. I asked, "What do you think independent reading should look like? sound like?" My friends did well. They knew what independent reading should look like. When it came to what it shouldn't look like…

Book Whisperer Idea

First of all, I am overjoyed because I got to spend the weekend with my daughter. So happy she was able to come home from college for a few days, so I am super happy. Ok, now to The Book Whisperer idea... I got an idea to help with our goal of 40 books per The Book Whisperer. (I did post a little about this awhile ago ) First of all, loving having my kiddos read every morning instead of "morning work". It really sets the tone for a peaceful start to the day. We have been having a Book Frenzy…
